Above the scene is an inscription of a poem by Wen Zhengming in running script. Wen (1470 - 1559) is a celebrated calligrapher and painter from the Ming Dynasty. The poem describes the location of the towers and pine trees, the lamentation of the writer, of fallen leaves drifting away with the river, leaving the mountains with only the lingering fragrance of autumn. On the reverse side of the ink slab is a poem in a square frame surrounded by dragons flying among clouds. The poem is an inscription in regular script, comprising of eight lines, with five characters in each line. It was originally written by Emperor Qianlong for one of his ministers, Guan Huai, who was in charge of national etiquette, rituals, and rules governing tributes. Guan Huai was also an accomplished calligrapher and painter.
