TitleMay 13th Incident
CreatorChoo Keng Kwang
DescriptionThe titular incident is the 1954 clash between Chinese students and Indian police officers of the British colonial government over the issue of part-time military service that resulted in student arrests and over 20 people injured.
Portraying the authorities as brutish enforcers, the print identifies its sympathies with the student demonstrators even as the artist himself is depicted as a by-standing observer in the top left corner. The edition in the Museum’s collection was printed in 1998 from the original woodcut.A policeman beating up a girl student with his trunchion while other rioting students swirl around them. The "May 13th Incident" refers to the clash of students from Chinese schools with the police in front of the Istana on 13th May 1954. The students were protesting against the introduction of National Service.
