TitleCries of Bondage
CreatorWee Beng Chong (1938)
DescriptionAn abstract composition describing a state of being and feeling; in this case a state of bondage. A myriad of colours are laid upon the canvas in a free and swift manner with certain areas of impasto. It is not total abstraction as the title might suggest. It is easily recognisable as a monumental cityscape. Physical features of buildings appear and disappear in a conglomercation of details enveloped in darkness as in a twilight zone. The total effect is one of oppressive gloom enlivened, here and there, by the bright colours laid on thickly to intermingle with the dominant black. Wee Beng Chong is a very versatile artist who excels in Chinese and Western art (traditional and modern). He is a painter, sculptor, calligrapher and seal carver. He is the first painter to be awarded the Cultural Medallion for excellence in Art in 1979. He is also one of the founders of the Singapore Modern Art Society.
