ОписаниеSun Yee was born in Zhejiang, China, and grew up in an artistic environment. She received her formal education at the Xinhua Art Academy in Shanghai and University of Japan in Tokyo, then studied at the Fernand Léger studio in Paris. Sun graduated from the Shanghai Art College in 1938, and held her first solo exhibition in 1940. In 1953, she exhibited at the Salon des Beaux Arts in Paris in which her works were well received and acquired by the French government. The following year, she journeyed and settled in Singapore where she established the Singapore Academy of Arts and served as principal and lecturer. Sun was a great influence and contributor to the emerging Malayan art scene, nurturing fledging local artists and dedicating her life to local art education while continuing to explore novel ways of presenting ink and non-traditional subjects. In the 1960s, she held an exhibition ‘Nanyang Flowers’ of local flora rendered in the traditional ink and wash.
In ‘Flowers’, Sun’s delicate brushwork blooms in a local plumeria species, showcasing her successful synthesis of traditional ink techniques on local motifs.
