НазваниеA Dictum from the Ming Dynasty in Seal Script
This is a copy of a dictum from the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) executed in a particular style of seal script known as the Zhongdingwen. The Zhongdingwen refers to writing found on bronze vessels of the Shang, Zhou, Qin and Han periods (16th century BCE - 220 CE). It falls within the category of the big seal script.
In this calligraphy, the calligrapher demonstrates his ingenuity in the masterful blending of basic seal script with its variants to create a new and interesting hybrid. For instance, the rectangular and formal basic seal script is skilfully combined with the pictographic appeal of the so-called "bird and insect" seal script (Niaochongzhuang). The viewer is immediately struck by the overall visual impresseion of neat pictorial representations calibrated with ruler-straight lines and juxtaposed with flexible curves, rather than the distinctive constitution of calligraphy.
