НазваниеKain panjang ('long cloth', woman's hip wrap) - C
ОписаниеSuch batiks were made in Lasem, partly for export to the Jambi and Palembang region of Sumatra where their popularity lay in the richness of the colours and the finesse of the patterns. The centre-field design of stylised birds among leafy floral scrolls is reminiscent of certain patterns in Indian chintz. The kepala ("head"), composed of tumpal (triangular motifs representing bamboo shoots) and floral patterns when worn. This pagi-sore ("morning-evening") feature is characteristic of batik produced in Lasem for export to Sumatra.“Batik production did not become a widespread home industry until the second half of the 19th century when variations of these standard court patterns became increasingly numerous.
This early 20th century ‘kain panjang’ from Lasem was produced partly for export to the Jambi and Palembang regions of Sumatra, where their popularity lay in the richness of the colours and the finesse of the patterns. The pattern featuring stylized birds among leafy floral scrolls is reminiscent of certain patterns in Indian chintz. The colour scheme of each trasverse border is different from the other so that a single cloth may provide two different patterns when worn.
