While the land may be foreign, the depiction of it contains imagery of a colonial presence not unfamiliar to the artist or other British viewers. Advancing from the foreground, the viewer’s eye is led to the flagstaff planted on the summit of a high point: the national flag of the colonial masters representing their stake of claim over the colony. Thus, alongside a sense of nostalgia is perhaps Dyce’s sence of patriotic pride. It is in this light that Daniels (1993:5) argues that “imperialist nationalists, almost by definition, have been intent to annex the home-lands of others in their identity myths. They have projected on these lands and their inhabitants pictorial codes expressing both an affinity with the colonizing country and an estrangement from it”.
