In this instance, it is a covering brief by Yan alerting the emperor to the following - "Recently, I have composed the ‘Stele Inscription on the Bodhisattva Manjusri (Wenshu Shili Pusa Bei)’. As I tried my best to cater to the wishes of the emperor, there may be parts that do not rhyme and harmonise well." The first twenty-seven words of the original inscription were reproduced in this piece of calligraphy by Shen Zengzhi, who managed to capture Yan Zhenqing's style with great success.
