НазваниеInscription from the Bronze ‘Hu’ (Vessel) of Huanzi-Mengjiang in Seal Script 篆书齐洹子孟姜壶铭文
ОписаниеThis panel is the first of a set of Four Hanging Scrolls written by Ling Yunchao. It is based on the inscription found on the bronze vessel named after Huanzi Mengjiang, a member of the eminent family of the Marquis of Qi from the Spring and Autumn period (770 - 476 BCE). When Huanzi Mengjiang died, the Zhou emperor granted an elaborate funeral. A bronze vessel was specially cast to record this event.
The inscription on bronze vessels during the Spring and Autumn period was engraved in big seal script. The characters gradually developed into highly regulated forms, befitting its function of recording significant events for posterity and accolades paid to prominent personalities.
In this particular work, the calligrapher executed the strokes in the yuanbifa (round brush method). This method is also known as jiaofeng, which is done through the circular movement of the brush stroke while writing the script, concealing the tip's tapering end. It is an attempt to use a brush to simulate inscription on bronze vessels. The result - uniform, powerful and bold strokes appropriate for the expression of a solemn theme.
