BeschrijvingNg Eng Teng (1934 – 2001) is recognised as one of Singapore’s most prolific modern sculptors. The largest collection of his sculptures, paintings and sketches are held at the NUS Museum, National University of Singapore. Wealth and Contentment were originally commissioned by Development Bank of Singapore in 1974 for display at the Plaza Singapura. Placed prominently in its atrium, they became popular features of the shopping mall. Following the redevelopment of the building, the sculptures were donated to NUS in 1997. Completed in cement over wire-mesh structures, the sculptures typify the artist’s style and thematic interests. The two figures are choreographed as complementary forms, each keeping the other in her gaze. Their crescent-shaped bodies are voluminous, yet light in appearance. While sharing the basic form, their postures and hand gestures suggest contrasting but subtle states of movement and rest. Through the combination of naturalistic and abstracted elements, Ng Eng Teng prompts the interplay of form and message, inviting a closer scrutiny on the human condition.
