VervaardigerYeoh Jin Leng (b. 1929 Malaysia)
BeschrijvingMalaysia had newly attained self-rule when Yeoh Jin Leng returned from London in the early 1960s after graduating from the Chelsea College of Art, to an art scene filled with optimism and aspirations for the new nation. As various ideological streams vied to dominate the discourse on artistic form and content for the expression of Malaysian identity, Yeoh stood among those who looked to internationalism as the direction for modern Malaysian art. For this group, many of whom, like Yeoh, had freshly returned from overseas art training, internationalism assumed the form of Abstract Expressionism
Ovum hails from this early period of Yeoh’s practice when he made lyrical abstract paintings in which nature is invoked as source and subject. Here, primacy is given to formal values. The composition is a delicate balance of floating forms that dialogue in complementary arrangements of space and tones. This careful balance is set off by evident gestures of the brush, bringing to bear a painting that throbs with quiet energy.A symbolic rendering of a purportedly x-ray vision of an Ovum, It represents a transitional phase in Yeoh's art from representation to Abstract Expressionism. The painting came about subconsciously as the artist interacted with colours, shapes, forms and space. Yeoh Jin Leng is a leading Malaysian painter, ceramist and sculptor who pioneered modernism in Malaysian art, He was trained in U,K. and has received many awards for his services to art and education in Malaysia.
