[nb-NO]Creator[nb-NO]Goh Beng Kwan
[nb-NO]Description[nb-NO]Abstract Composition was painted when Goh Beng Kwan was experimenting with Abstract Expressionism as a student in New York. Bring together geometric forms and expressive marks, Goh's interest was in achieving dynamic dialogue and balance in his composition. A distinct element of the work is the broad ring in black above the yellow line, a pictorial element Goh Beng Kwan calls the "calligraphic form", an expressive element created with one broad and continuous stroke of the brush to feature as the kinetic drama in a composition. It is a non-figurative composition of geometric shapes in a limited colour range with black dominating. The soft sinous yellow thread provides a strong contrast to the bulky and static forms surrounding it. This undated piece is probably an early work before the artist developed into a full fledged collagist known for his brilliantly coloured collages based on impressions gathered from his environment and Chinese root. Goh Beng Kwan's longstanding interest in collage was cultivated when he was studying in the U.S. He was inspired by the works of the American Abstract Expressionists before he ventured into his own form of Abstract Expressionist collages in the late 1970s. He was conferred the Cultural Medallion in 1989.
