[nb-NO]Description[nb-NO]Gao Qifeng was a native of Panyu district of the Guangdong province in China. He learned painting at an early age from his brother Gao Jianfu, and in 1907 left for Japan to study with Tanaka Raisho, during which China had looked towards Japan’s success in modernising culture and education. As one of the leading artists of Chinese modern painting, Gao was also a proponent of the Lingnan School, executing works in which subjects are vivid and realistic yet convey a dreamlike visual impact, the result of his successful synthesis of the poeticism of Chinese painting and Japanese and Western plein air techniques.
This painting, however, departs from idealism and romanticism, instead rendered in a manner of realism that captures the mist and rain that shrouds the mountainscape.
