A half cut-up massive spherical rock occupies practically the entire picture space. A village sits atop the flat plane of the rocky promontory. A path leads down from the excavated cleft of the huge boulder in the foreground. A stream flows around the base. Everything is compressed within the half globular form. It is an energetic scene, a romantic fantasy heightened by strong bright colours and spherical shapes which speak of Cubist intent. “Brook is a complex composition of a Balinese village in levels with the meru towers of the village temple at the top. Descending terraces lead the eye to the stream where little figures of bathers and pedestrians bearing baskets convey the mundane activities of an idyllic village scene. The painting was made a year after Cheong’s first painting trip to Bali with Chen Wen Hsi, Liu Kang and Chen Chong Swee, in 1952. The four artists spent more than a month in Bali, following which an exhibition was organized in 1953. The trip served to consolidate Bali as an important thematic source for the four men and for artists of the Nanyang School.” (Highlights of Southeast Asian Collections).“If Lui Kang can be appraised as upholding the integrity of the easel picture in ‘Cathedral’, then in ‘Brook’, 1953, Soo Pieng can be regarded as severely disrupting the sense of unity which is cherished as an abiding value of the easel picture. In terms of the practice of painting in the fifties, this picture marks radical departures.
