Both hand in dnyana mudra position. This is a “seated sculpture of the Buddha under the hoods of naga Muchalinda, an important event from Buddha’s life and frequently represented in the Khmer region. This circa 12th century image is sculpted with great precision and details, suggesting that it may have been painted at some point in the past. It depicts Buddha in ‘dhyanasana’, performing penance: a naga king by the name of Muchalinda gave him shelter from a rainstorm during meditation, six weeks after his enlightenment. “While retaining some features of the serpent, the naga has become a kind of throne for the Buddha, who is much more the universal monarch that the peerless religious teacher.
