CréateurChris Yap
Description“…, Chris Yap explores popular representations of the Peranakans and reflects on whether these articulate the collective identity of the community in today’s context. He conceptualises the gallery space as a theatre and uses photography and installations as narratives. A set of five photographic images (107 x 140 cm each) represents the stage on which the lives of an extended Peranakan family unfold. These images are the key to deciphering Yap’s critique of current portrayals of the culture. At the same time, they provide a mediating environment, on the one hand putting us at ease using familiar scenes and typical characters, but on the other hand, encouraging us to reassess common assumptions to discover new perspectives about the Peranakan community.”
