CréateurChong Fah Cheong (1946)
DescriptionChong Fah Cheong (b. 1946) is known for his public sculptures, many of which were inspired by his memories of growing up in the city-state. His practice is characterized by a persistent and zealous study of the many materials that he employs in art making. Whether wood, marble, granite, jade or metal, Chong is convinced that an intimate knowledge of the material’s physical properties enables a sculptor to refine his technique of working. Chong’s engagement with sculpture making began when he was tasked to use the wood from a felled tree in the schoolyard to teach students three-dimensional art making. He taught himself the methods of chipping and carving wood; this mode of self-learning continued as his practice expanded to include other materials.
