TitreMata-ni-pacheda (temple hanging) - C
DescriptionSuch temple cloths were made by members of the Vaghri caste for ritual use by labourers known as Harijans and Vaghris. The central figure is Mata (mother Goddess in her fearsome aspect), seated on her throne under a canopy, brandishing weapons for vanquishing demons. She is surrounded by the sacred bull Nandi, minor gods, warriors on horseback, attendants and birds. A contemporary touch is found in the soldier with a rifle wearing a topi (hard, canvas hat).
