DescriptionThis weft ikat shows the impact of foreign influences in the use of silk and imported dyes and in its designs in subtle shades of blue, yellow, green and purple on a deep red ground. A further richness is achieved by the addition of the two bands of supplementary weft in metallic yarn in the transverse borders.
“Weft, warp and double ikat are produced in Indonesia. Weft-ikat centres are found along the trade routes that had contact with Indian merchants, such as coastal Sumatra, Java, Bali and Nusa Penida.
In Sumatra, particularly in the Palembang and Pasemah regions, a local silk ikat industry emerged. After producing for several hundred years it ceased operations in 1940. These fine weft ikat bear remblances to patola from Gujarat and painyed and printed mordant-dyed cottons from the Coromandel Coast.” (Past, Present , Beyond: Re-nascence of an Art Collection, Page 45)Rare silk ikat combined with metallic yarn in supplementary weft, late 19th to early 20th C, fairly good condition
