DescriptionGao Jianfu was a famous Guangdong artist. Together with his brother, Gao Qifeng (1889 - 1933), and his friend, Chen Shuren (1883 - 1949), they brought the Japanese nihonga style to China, creating the "New Chinese Painting". The historian Ralph Crozier remarked: [Gao's is] a wild romantic landscape far removed from the serene placid view of nature usually prevailing in Chinese landscape painting. At first glance, this landscape seems "traditional" in the choice of subject matter and in execution. Yet its rugged grandeur strives for a sense of wonder. It exemplifies Gao Jianfu's effort to infuse a new, exciting spirit to Chinese landscape painting.
