TítuloFruitseller
DescripciónFruitseller by Cheong Soo Pieng extends the distinct pictorial idiom that the artist has developed for composing figures in oil painting into his woodcut. The fruitseller boy is rendered highly stylized. Cheong's emphasis is on acknowledging the light source coming from the right of the picture illuminating it. A dog, a roadside push-cart seller and a woman clad in sarong with an umbrella provide interesting contrasts to the rendition of the fruitseller. The cover of a Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts publication featuring a woodcut print entitled FRUITSELLER. A customer is eating a piece he has bought and a dog is sniffing hoping for a crumb. The fruitseller's carrt and its owner is shown behind. The back of a woman carrying a handbag and umbrella fits nicely in the top left corner. The print is distinguished for its rich varieties of cuts displaying the artist's sensitivity to the woodcut medium. The distribution of the dark and light is beautifully controlled.
