TítuloMalaccan Nyonya (Lady)
CreadorAw Eng Kwang 欧英光
DescripciónMalaccan Nonya is a figurative sculpture that reveals Aw Eng Kwang's keen interest and observation of local cultures and peoples. She is seen outdoors carrying an umbrella for the tropical heat and occasional shower. Her accoutrements mark her out immediately as a Peranakan. Aw has spared no details in rendering the rich pattern and motifs of her batik sarong, capturing accurately the ornate aesthetics of Nyonya material culture.
“Aw Eng Kwang’s ‘Malaccan Nonya’ (undated) is a work that provokes rich associations with textiles. Indeed, the image provides a complete ensemble for an appreciation of apparel that is distinctive to members in this community.” (Past, Present , Beyond: Re-nascence of an Art Collection, Page 66)
