TitlePortrait of Tan Beng Swee
CreatorArtist unknown
Description“[This] portrait of Tan Beng Swee (1828–1884)[B2012-0003-003-0]… lacks an artist’s signature but is highly likely to be a work by Ong Qwee Hong. It is also plausible that a portrait (now lost) of his brother Tan Beng Gum (1832–1893) …and [a] watercolour portrait of Tan Kim Seng …are by this same artist. These two portraits, together with that of Chee Kiat Bong [B2014-0001-002-0], have in common the upholstered armchair with the tassel fringe on its arms. The portraits of Tan Kim Seng, Tan Beng Swee, Chee Kiat Bong …all have in common very similarly rendered footstools.” (Inherited & Salvaged, Family Portraits from the NUS Museum Straits Chinese Collection, Page 48).
