TitleLove
CreatorWee Beng Chong (1938)
Description“Wee treats naturalistic and abstract subjects with characteristic virtuosity. Seemingly disoriented in space, the subtle organic form calls for the viewer to form an appreciation of the subject matter through his or her own personal experiences.”
(Crossroads: The Making of New Identities, Page 28).
A mysterious object placed diagonally within a square has an instant impact on the viewer. Is it the handle of a Malay Kris? But its title "LOVE" suggests something else. Taking the cue from this, it soon became clear that the object is a muinmified couple wrapped in a tight embrace. The figures are treated realistically like a jade carving. Wee Beng Chong is a very versatile multi-disciplined artist who is equally proficient in both Chinese and Western art. He is a painter, sculptor, calligrapher, printmaker and seal carver. He was conferred the Cultural Medallion for his excellence and contributors to art.
