BeschreibungBelieved to have the magical property of warding off illness, this cloth features kneeling figures in the wayang (shadow puppet) style disposed around a central cruciform star. The wide transverse borders are decorated with the tumpal motif in supplementary warp weave.
“The only double ikat found in the Indonesian archipelago are woven in the village of Tenganan Pageringsingan in Bali. The inhabitants are thought to have descended from Vedic Indian immigrants who brought the art of double ikat with them from the eastern coast. They weave a double ikat known as ‘geringsing’ (from the Sanskrit ‘gring’ “sickness”, and ‘sing’ “not”), reputed to protect the wearer from harm and illness.
