TitelSketch of Rambutan Garden 2 红毛丹园(草稿二)
OphavLim Mu Hue
BeskrivelseLim Mu Hue was born in Singapore to a humble family. Since an early age Lim had shown great interest in art, which led him to pursue an education at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), persuading the then-principal Lim Hak Tai to enroll him at a subsidised fee because he could not afford the school fees. In 1955, Lim graduated with a diploma in painting. He taught at NAFA for a few years before working as a cartoonist at the now-defunct daily Nanyang Siang Pau. Although Lim was trained in Western painting and known for his woodblock prints of local subjects such as kampong scenes, puppet theatres and the changing landscapes of Singapore, he always sought new ways of integrating Western and Chinese concepts and techniques, and developed his own distinctive style.
In these two sketches, Lim uses baimiao (白描), the Chinese ink technique, to delineate the contours and tones of the larger-scale ink painting titled ‘Han Wai Toon’s Rambutan Gardens’.
