TitelTapis
BeskrivelseTapis are heavily embroidered cotton sarongs. They are worn by women from the southern Sumatran region of Lampung at ceremonies marking rites of passage. These fabrics are unique in Indonesia in their use of embroidery as the major decorative element. The imported metallic yarns and sequins are couched in simple, geometric patterns on cotton woven in longitudinal bands of ochre, red and dark indigo blue. The garment is composed of two panels sewn together at the selvage. It is then sewn again into a tube so that it can be worn like a sarong with the row of tumpal (triangular bamboo shoot motif) at the bottom.
