OphavSuri Mohyani
BeskrivelseKampong locates man at the heart of a cultivated and cleared troical idyllic. Coconut trees, the quintessential symbol of the tropical landscape spring up in abundance from a cluster of attap huts made lively by the presence of human figures. A stream is located in front of the huts, signifying a clearing where the artist has located himself to capture the scene.
Compared to the works of Charles Dyce and Lim Cheng Hoe placed in comparative perspective, the watercolourist has entered the heart of the tropical idyllic in an undeterred position to observe and muse but still at a vantage point removed from direct involvement with the people and landscape depicted.A sun-soaked village of attap huts with a stream flowing through. It is an idyllic scene favoured by lcoal watercolourists. Suri Mohyani was a pioneer Malay watercolourist. He was self-taught and later won a scholarship to study art in Australia. He was in the education service.
