TitelPoem in Running Script 行书七绝诗句
BeskrivelseThe poem, written in running script, consists of four lines with seven words in each. The first two lines describe the following scene - "A flock of geese soar skyward from the waterside at dusk; autumn splendour is captured in the reflection of red knotweed blossoms in water." Here, the poet Tan Yankai highlighted the time and season by referring to the flowers and geese. Autumn is a time when people tend to be nostalgic. In the ensuing two lines, Tan changed his tone lamented - "As I think of the old garden at dusk, I wonder how many friends will be gathered together to reminisce the past at the pavilion by the river?" Tan pined for the moon of his hometown, and clearly missed his old friends even more. Being away from home, he could only find solace in deep sighing and let his thoughts escape to some distant land. Chinese calligraphy is a reflection of the calligrapher's temperament. As the old saying goes, "The writing reveals the personality of a person". In other words, one can grasp an understanding of a person by looking at his or her handwriting. Tan studied the calligraphy of Yan Zhenqing (709 - 785), a brilliant calligrapher from the Tang Dynasty. Yan was a man of noble character: brave, fortright and loyal. His writing mirrors his character, in its power, vigour and strength befitting a great master. Tan's calligraphy successfully captured the spontaneity, boldness, strength and vigour typical of Yan's style in his strokes as shown in this work.
