TitelHock Tin
Beskrivelse“Hock Tin, 1961 is a sculpted portrait head, displaying formal as well as psychological subtlety. Eng Teng began to use ciment fondu in 1959, on meeting with Jean Bullock; it was a spur that propelled him into the domain of sculpture and into developing his three-dimensional practice. The head is a potent signifier of identify, intelligence and individuated power; it embodies that persona comprehensively. Eng Teng is drawn to these as sculpture prospects and develops them in the early phase of his three-dimensional practice. In subsequent and later phases, the head undergoes radical transformations; it is de-psychologised in order to project altered, formal and conceptual issues. In doing so, the pre-eminence customarily accorded to the head is upturned; in its stead, the head is susceptible to unpredictable interventions, rendering it as a hapless, comical object. In Hock Tin, the artist’s niece, Eng Teng approaches the subject affectionately; yet he maintains a degree of distance. The cheeks are modelled softly; the eyebrows are raised prominently, resonating with the hair on the head which settles as a thick, dense mantle. The lips are pursed firmly while the eyes are sightless, as if withholding, even shielding, the self as an inner, private and inaccessible domain.“ (Bodies & Figures, An Overview of Ng Eng Teng, Page 10).
