Posing the figure as seated and in profile, projects it on a unified plane, conforming to a front relief-plane. This is reinforced by a propensity to compose the figure by means of dark lines, which are treated extensively as tones. Eng Teng outlines the primary form with thick dark lines; the darkness is extended towards the centre of the form, paling as it goes in. This effect is produced by employing many small strokes, some of which others are consolidated by accumulations of shading. The graded shading represents graded recession of the surface towards its edges. The two-way movement simulates curved planes and, therefore, of volume. These indicate sculptural thinking and attributes.
