الوصفFloating Forms hails from the transition period between the Pago-Pago series and the Mindscape series. Here, we see remnants of his Pago-Pago series where vegetal, architectural and totemic forms, drawn from Latiff’s research on Southeast Asian landscape and cultures, coalesce in organic and abstract motifs to venture powerful imageries of imposing, and at times anthropomorphic, constructions.
Towards the close of Pago-Pago series, his forms took on attributes of metamorphosis, the organic forms seemingly in states of growing and transforming. Floating Forms pushes further into abstraction. Where the Pago-Pago forms tend to be grounded as to invoke landscape compositions, the abstract forms in this painting are suspended within colour frames as if to seal them within an internal order. Latiff would progress to pure abstraction in the early 1970s with the Mindscape series where all allusions to external and physical phenomena are abandoned. Two Abstract shapes twisting and turning in space have their origin in plant life, so it seems. Nature's hidden source of energy, its constant evolution and never ending rhythm provide Abdul Latiff Mohidin with the motif for many of his creations.
