An accomplished painter, calligrapher and seal carver, he spent his early years among the art circles of Suzhou and Shanghai. Around 1940, Chan journeyed to Singapore and taught calligraphy for many years, and with his prolific oeuvre local subjects and themes, and Balinese life, became one of the leading proponents of the Nanyang style.
