DescriptionSeated Buddha with halo round his head. Right hand in bhumisparsa mudra position. The Buddha at the moment of his enlightement calls upon the earth to bear witness that he has resisted the temptation of the Mara. Lion throne at the base. Backrest.
This Buddha Akshobhya sculpture “is from eastern India, of the Post Gupta period, circa 7th century, depicting Buddha in ‘bhumisparsha mudra’, seated in ‘padmasana’ touching the earth with the right hand. The carving is very summary and lacks details, while retaining the massiveness of the eastern Indian sculptural form. Here Buddha is shown seated on a throne with a decorative mat, flanked by lions on either side, surrounded by a halo which depicts his enlightenment.” (Past, Present , Beyond: Re-nascence of an Art Collection, Page 33)
