At the end of the work is a lengthy colophon by the calligrapher Yang Qingsheng, explaining his reasons for this work. Prior to taking part in the examinations at Nanjing in the autumn of 1897, Yang was instructed by his wife's grandfather, Yabai, to copy the eight poems (each with four lines and five characters in each line) which Liang composed for Yabai for posterity. The eight poems depict eight scenes, namely - "Spring Willow of Jizhuang", "Chanting from an Old Temple". "Lotus Under the Moonlight in the Eastern Garden", "White Snow and Raspberries of the Eastern Hill", "Wood Cutter Returning at Sunset". "Boat on Westlake in the Rain", "Crows of Kuilou" and "Walking Across the Snow at Dawn". The lines of the poem, beautifully crafted in running script, leave a lasting impression on the viewer.
