الوصفThis patola was purchased in Patan from the weaver Keshavlal L Salvi, a descendant of many generations of patolawalas (patola weavers). These weavers produced silk double-ikat saris for weddings or ceremonial occasions for the women of the wealthy Vohra Muslim merchant cast. This specimen features a popluar design of elephant, flowering plant and bird motifs.
“’Patola’, the silk double-ikat saris of Gujarat, were once woven in Patan, Surat and other centres, Presently, there are only two families of Jains weaving them in Patan. They were expensive because of the richness of the silk, the intricacy of the patterning process and because the weavers were of high caste. They were mainly made for weddings or ceremonial occasions mainly for the women of the wealthy Vohra Muslim merchant caste.” (Past, Present , Beyond: Re-nascence of an Art Collection, Page 43)
