Description“The kebaya is regarded as the trademark of a nyonya. This intricately embroidered top is worn over a camisole and paired with a long wraparound sarong. Finely made jewellery of diamond and gold are deemed suitable accessories to match. Although traditional, the kebaya has so far avoided the fate of the fingerbowl and continues to be used by Peranakan ladies. However, from an outfit for daily use, it is now seen as an attire mainly for special occasions. In the installation Costume, Yap proposes to actively bring the kebaya forward. The light blue fabric is treated to create patches and streaks of white, like the fading effect popularised by the denim industry. The heavy accessories draped around the neckline reflect, on the one hand, the nyonyas’ fondness for jewellery. On the other hand, with ornaments made from mirrors cut into shapes resembling common objects and strung with ribbons, strings and pieces of fabric, the assemblage-necklace has more in common with modern bling. On a wider scale, Costume articulates the possibility of adapting traditional objects and traditional ideas to accommodate modern tastes, needs and desires; in doing so, traditions remain alive and in circulation, albeit in a transformed manner.”
