TitleProfile of Seated Man
CreatorNg Eng Teng (1934 – 2001)
Description“Profile of Seated Man, 1961, (Fig.2) is a confident, affirmative representation; it brings to fruition painted and drawn portrait-figures that Eng Teng commenced in 1955. Posing the figure as seated and in profile, projects it on a unified plane, conforming to a front relief-plane. This is reinforced by a propensity to compose the figure by means of dark lines, which are treated extensively as tones. Eng Teng outlines the primary form with thick dark lines; the darkness is extended towards the centre of the form, paling as it goes in. This effect is produced by employing many small strokes, some of which others are consolidated by accumulations of shading. The graded shading represents graded recession of the surface towards its edges. The two-way movement simulates curved planes and, therefore, of volume. These indicate sculptural thinking and attributes. Note, for instance, lines and shading that curve, bend and bulge in delineating folds of the trousers and of the sleeveless vest; they register formal conceptions of space that are analogous to relief sculpture.” (Bodies & Figures, An Overview of Ng Eng Teng, Page 9).
