TitleAfter the Fire (Bukit Ho Swee)
CreatorLim Yew Kuan (1929)
Description“After the Fire is a fine example of the efforts of the use of woodcut as a medium both for documenting purposes as well as a form of mass media.”
(Crossroads: The Making of New Identities, Page 56).
Lim Yew Kuan's After the Fire (Bukit Ho Swee) is a particularly large piece for a woodcut print detailing the devastated landscape in the aftermath of the blaze. A lone figure stands at the centre of the devastation, head clutched in hands out of helplessness and disbelief.
A scene of devastation in the aftermath of the great Bukit Ho Swee fire on 25 May 1961 that razed a colony of attap huts to the ground. It highlights the plight of squatter families who were in dire need of proper housing. Bukit Ho Swee has the reputation of having been razed to the ground three times by major fires: in 1934, 1961 and 1968. In 1983 the Bukit Ho Swee Housing Estate was completed to accomodate the lower income group of Singapore society.
