DescriptionThe Bukit Ho Swee fire on May 25 1961 razed more than 2,200 squatter houses and made 16,000 homeless occasioned a national emergency that saw massive charity drive and immediate action by the government for construction projects by the Housing Development Board to relocate and house the fire’s victims. A number of artists had dealt with the Bukit Ho Swee fire as a theme in their work. Lim’s 1966 woodcut of the fire is a particularly large piece detailing a devastated and the desolated landscape in the aftermath of the blaze.A panoramic view of a Malay kampong showing a vast expanse of farmland, a cluster of coconut trees, two attap houses and two figures in the foreground. It is rich in details and attests to the artist's command of the woodcut technique, his handling of light and his sensitive feeling for the rural atmosphere of his subject matter.
