DescriptionSurrounded by a sea of red, the design of Goagajah caves in Bali is confined within an oblong shape. A flurry of swift and expressionistic strokes articulate the deiials of the facade on the cave. A mask-like face (a kala) dons the entrance to the cave. IThe facade of Goa Gajah, a well known Balinese landmark in Ubud which was a huge mask like face of a drooling demon above its entrance. Abdul Latiff Mohidin had recreated his own piece to confirm his own concept of ferocious premitivism. The benign beast with a drooling tongue had been transformed into a demon with gnashing teeth and a wide open mouth. The underlying spirituality had not changed which is that of instilling a sense of reverence and awe for the unknown.
