DescriptionNative of Jiaxing, Zhejiang province of China, Zhu Cheng had been active in the Shanghai art scene by the 1860s. He learned the new formats of Chinese painting and composition from Zhang Xiong and, especially, celebrity painter Wang Li, adopting the hanging scroll that allowed him to create a strong sense of movement spanning the length of the scrolls.
Evident in this painting, Zhu’s precise balance in composition and dynamic brushwork impart expressive energy, with vibrant colours and auspicious themes that are representative of the new perspective of scholarly paintings of the Shanghai School.
