TitleTreading on Snow and Looking for Plum Blossoms
CreatorFei Danxu
DescriptionFei Danxu specialised in figure painting, especially in the genre of beautiful women. A lone figure with a wide hat and flowing robe is presented in profile. He is looking thoughtfully at the plum blossoms in a snowy landscape. The figural depiction in this work shows a stylistic connection to the portraits done by Luo Pin (1833 - 99). Although there is a dedicatory inscription in this painting, we do not know if the figure is meant to be a portrait. Figure and landscape, sparse colour and ink on silk, hanging scroll, 97x40.5cm, By FEI Tanxu (1801-1850), two personal seals of the two names in intaglio and relief respectively, a collector's seal "" in relief at lower left hand corner. A recluse with long beard wearing straw hat and flowing overcoat with a gnarled staff leaning on his left shoulder, seen in profile looking up a hill-slope with leafless trees overhanging him.
