It offers the following encouragement to new graduates - "Words of the virtuous shine as brilliantly as the sun and the moon; glorious history of the past illuminates one's writings." In this couplet, Shi experimented by executing the official script within the square structure of the seal script. In this process, the "silkworm heads and goose tails" - distinctive features of the official script - were eliminated. The deliberate use of a brush with minimal ink created a "dry effect", which helped establish a somber and archaistic effect on the work.
